One of the two children who fell from an apartment window or opening Thursday has died, according to Minneapolis police.
The other child arrived at the hospital in critical condition, but police said Thursday night that his condition had been upgraded to serious and his injuries were believed to be non-life threatening.
Police responded to a report of two children falling out of an apartment window or opening on the southside of the city Thursday afternoon.
According to MPD spokesperson John Elder, the incident occurred at an apartment on the 2800 block of Pleasant Avenue.
Both of the children are believed to be under the age of 4, according to Elder. He said an adult was believed to have been present.
“Our hearts go out to those who are affected by this tragedy,” Elder said, going on to remind people to keep windows, sliding glass doors and other areas secure as warmer weather arrives.
Om Friday, candles, balloons and stuffed animals marked the spot where the two children children fell.
The property owner, Basim Sabri, arrived at the scene Thursday. He said what happened was heartbreaking, but added that all windows and balconies are up to code.
“It’s a tragic day that this actually happened today,” Sabri said.
One woman who lives in the apartment building said it was a tough time for the community.
“In our community it’s really hard, and I think this is going to have an impact on a lot of people,” Lamiya Said said.
