Warfa Abdillahi scores 16 in fourth quarter as Charlestown turns back BC High

Warfa Abdillahi scored 16 of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter as Charlestown defeated visiting BC High, 65-59, Saturday in a nonconference boys’ basketball game.

The Eagles had been soaring against City League teams this season, with double-digit victories over New Mission and South Boston, but came out flat on their second night of back-to-back games.

“They’re 17 they aren’t tired,” said BC High coach Bill Loughnane. “No excuses.”

Despite settling for contested 13-foot jump shots and refusing to drive the lane, BC High managed to run set plays offensively and dissected Charlestown’s defense with the give and go, which kept the game even at the half, 32-32. Charlestown’s Kewan Platt scored 13 of his 18 points in the first half.

In the third quarter, BC High started to hit its outside shots and took a 7-point lead into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, Abdillahi scored the team’s first 9 points to tie the game. Down the stretch, the senior guard added 7 more to give him 16 in the quarter, and a game-high 22 points overall.

“I was feeling it,” Abdillahi said. “I think my teammates got me the ball in the right places. Every shot I took felt like it was going to go in.”

Platt’s defensive presence (9 rebounds, 6 steals, and 5 blocks) and Abdillahi’s hot fourth quarter proved to be enough to turn back BC High.

“They like the challenge of coming from behind,” said Charlestown coach Edson Cardoso. “I don’t though.”
